Before we leap straight in have a think about these things. To start with, what is the employment situation that you are in? and secondly, what is the object of your new site?

Learning to build a basic business website isn't rocket science, if it were then I am reasonably sure that there would be a lot more rocket scientists around and a lot less web designers.

If you are a business owner or are intending to set up your own business then it may well be that you are the kind of person that can pick up the skills needed to produce a basic website. The fundamental web design subjects that need to be studied are; HTML, CSS and design fundamentals. For technical type people, it is often really tempting to leap straight in without considering the design aspect of your site. How a website looks on the web will give a direct impression of a business so making sure that time is spent considering design as well as function is very essential. This is where we come to the first question that you need to ask yourself. Do you have the time to study these skills?

Possibly you are out of employment and wanting to begin your own business. If this is your situation then you could have the time on your hands to learn the fundamentals, buy some domain hosting and get started on your business site.

If you already own or run a business the finding then extra time nedded may prove very difficult. If this fits your situation then the website that you make is probably not going to meet up to your current expectations.

The second question you ought to ask yourself is what is the website for? To answer this you first need to look at your business market and the level of professionalism that is expected of it.

Are you a sole trader such as an electrician or a motor mechanic that just needs to set up a web presence so that people in your local area looking online for your type of services can find your contact details and pick up the telephone? If this suits your kind of business then a very basic website is probably sufficient for your needs and it is realistic that you can achieve this by building your website yourself.

If your business falls in to what is deemed to be a more professional class of business such as accounting or a training provider then a basic looking site may not give an impression of your business that you want potential clients to see. If this fits your situation then it might be better for you to stick to running your business and to let a professional web designer build a professional looking website for you.
